Second-Hand Volvo V40
Used Volvo V40
The V40 first hit the British market in 1996 alongside the S40 saloon. V40s were built in Holland rather than Sweden. At launch, it was only available with 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol engines with a 1.9 turbo diesel being added later in the year. In early 2004 the V40 began to be phased out in favour of the V50. However, an all-new V40 was launched in 2012. Newer models are sleek and stylish, offering up-market looks.
What You Get
The V40 is pretty much a "lifestyle" car, so don't expect it to be able to carry huge loads. Boasting a wide range of safety features, you can count on this car to be a reliable buy. It was one of the first cars to feature a pop-up bonnet, while there are plenty of airbags on the inside to keep all passengers safe. It comes with either a standard or sports suspension and the interior is spacious, meaning the ride is comfortable.
How it Drives
A used V40 is practical, safe, well equipped and quite roomy. The handling is satisfactory and the petrol turbo versions are surprisingly rapid. Suspension improvements from 2000 onwards means that later cars ride and handle better than early ones. As you'd expect of any used Volvo, the V40 is packed with safety features, including multiple airbags and Side Impact Protection (SIPS). It's practical and well equipped, making for a sound choice.
