Used Jaguar Xj6

In 1986 Jaguar introduced the boxy XJ40 which was originally available with a choice of two engines, a 2.9 litre V6 or a 3.6 litre V6. Either could be specified as an XJ6 or as the higher trim, Sovereign. A 3.6 litre Daimler was also available as part of the same range and was replaced in 1988 with a 4.2 litre Limousine long wheel based version.

These early cars were plagued with reliability issues and in 1989 a new 4.0 litre engine replaced the old 3.6 litre. A sportier XJR version was also added to the range. Then, in 1990 a new 3.2 litre engine replaced the 2.9 litre.

February 1993 was when the mighty 6 litre V12 model came on board and was available as either a XJ12 or Daimler Double Six.

The new shaped, more reliable XJ6 was part of the new 1994 XJ6/Sovereign/Daimler range and came with a range of 3.2 or 4.0 litre engines. Also part of the range were the superb 4.0 litre supercharged XJR and a new look XJ12. The sovereign trim was also still available with either the 3.2 or 4.0 litre option and the Daimler was either supplied with the V12 6.0 litre or a 4.0 litre V6. In 1995 long wheel base versions were introduced across the range.

In 1997, the executive version of the used Jaguar XJ6 was made standard, having previously only been available as a special edition and the Sovereign was now supplied as a long wheelbase version as standard, the short wheelbase being available only by special order.

1997 saw the end of the legendary V12 engine and a new series of V8 engines were released, the supercharged version of which actually outperformed the V12.

Bang for your buck

The Jaguar XJ6 is a piece of British motoring history. It combines the reliability of its German equivalents with pure class and has to be driven to be believed. Post-1994 models also look the part and the interiors are steeped in tradition and quality. The used Jaguar XJ6 has something its Teutonic counterparts just can't get right, character.

What you'll pay

A 1994 second hand Jaguar XJ6 will cost around £5000, for a XJ6 4.0 litre model from the same year you are looking at around £6000 and the same amount should also bag the Sovereign 3.2 litre. 1994 Sovereign 4.0 litres are around £7000 and £8000 should be enough for the classic XJR.

Earlier models weren't built quite so well and decent examples don't appear on the market that often. Occasionally a 1990 plate pops up for under £1000. The last of the 2.9 litre XJ6s can be picked up from as little as £1500. Despite their slight unreliability, it may well be worth picking up the older cars at these prices.

What to check

Servicing a second hand Jaguar XJ6 can be very expensive so check when the next service is due before buying. If the service is due soon then this can be a very good negotiating point, especially as services can be over £600 and replacement parts for used XJ6s can be costly.

Later XJ6s are known for their reliability but when something does go wrong, parts can be very expensive. So buying a used Jaguar XJ6 from an approved Jaguar dealer can be a good idea as they will often provide a warranty for a certain time period or number of miles. There will, of course, be a slight premium to pay but this can be worth it for the peace of mind.

Replacement parts are not cheap, for instance if we take the 1994 Jaguar XJ6 Manual as an example then you are looking at over £1700 for an exhaust system and £90 for front dampers. A radiator will set you back £200, whereas a new alternator is around £1600. A major service will relieve you of £645 and a minor one just £285. All of these prices are exclusive of VAT.

How it drives

The engine and gear boxes in post 1994 models are noticeably better than those in earlier models. Having said that, all Jaguar XJ6 cars for sale provide an imperious drive with just the right balance between elegance and power.

Once you test drive one of these classic cars we are sure you'll be hooked so be sure to take your cheque book with you. You won't want to miss out.
