Second-Hand Jaguar XJ Series
Used Jaguar XJ Series
The first XJ was unveiled in 1968. It was the first series-production car to be made almost entirely from aluminium, which means it is 200kg lighter than its predecessor. This is despite it being longer, wider and taller than the previous car and having better head and legroom for all passengers. Soon after the initial launch, Jaguar introduced long wheelbase versions which were supplemented with the addition of the luxury Sovereign trim level and an XJ6 entry-level car. A diesel option was added in the spring of 2005 and in 2007 the XJ underwent a cosmetic upgrade which gave it a much more sporty look. Production then ended in 2010.
What You Get
The used Jaguar XJ is an understated work of genius. It still has the classic Jaguar looks and the interior is as classy and well put together as you would expect. But its innovative aluminium body improves it fuel economy, performance, rust resistance and carbon emissions rating. All this and the XJ is bigger than its predecessor both in terms of leg room and luggage space. All used Jaguar XJ models were fitted with the innovative self-levelling air suspension in combination with the CATS (Computer Active Technology Suspension) system.
How it Drives
Of the four engines available, the two 4.2-litre versions retained from the previous model are the top options and are the only units available in long-wheelbase form. In its normally aspirated form, the first of these V8s can generate 300 bhp, whereas the supercharged engine supplied with the XJR and Super V8 models gives 400 bhp. All this power combined with the XJ's lightweight frame results in an astonishing performance. If you can afford the asking price for a used XJ, you could do a lot worse than invest in one. They are reliable, stylish and good to drive.
