Second-Hand Daihatsu Materia

Used Daihatsu Materia
All car designers know that the most efficient shape to maximise space in a small car is that of a box. But, very few have had the courage to do so. Released in the UK in 2007, the Daihatsu Materia sold in numbers because of its practicality and space capacity. Plus, used Daihatsu Materias for sale at RAC Cars can be picked up for a great price.

What You Get
The first thing that hits you, is the brick-like design of the Materia. The design is actually bold and striking. The severe lines and aggressively flared wheel arches give it a confident, modern stance which is enhanced by a high window line and squat, low slung appearance. Inside it is clear that the cabin has benefited from lessons on finish from Daihatsu’s Japanese owners, Toyota. The interior is happily free from scratchy plastics and cheap-looking switchgear, common on earlier models. The boxy design works wonders for interior space and the car’s versatility is enhanced by a high roofline and rear seats which can be moved back and forth depending on the need for boot capacity against rear passenger leg room. Edgy blue lighting in door pockets and around stereos add to the car’s funky look and feel. Unusually, the car came in just a single trim level, with metallic paint being the only factory-fitted option available. That standard trim is good though, with air conditioning, CD player with MP3 jack, remote central locking split folding rear seat, alloy wheels and front fog lamps. Safety equipment is also good with twin front and side airbags, ABS and EBD.

How it Drives
Look under the bonnet of the Daihatsu Materia and you will find the same 1.5 litre petrol engine that is used on the Toyota Yaris. It is a proven and capable unit, developing 102bhp and will take you from rest to 60mph in a perfectly respectable 10.8 seconds in a manual car or 13.7 seconds in the automatic. Top speed is 106mph. The engine is refined at more sensible speeds and delivers its power smoothly. The ride has been altered to suit European tastes and Daihatsu has added a front anti-roll bar and the springs and dampers have been stiffened. Never too popular as a new car, there is no reason why a sensibly priced used Materia won't make a sound and eye-catching second-hand purchase.
