RAC Cars Need To Know:
Caterham is quite a big brand name now, thanks to the F1 team, but in truth; the company has been around for ages. It’s always specialised in sporty, lightweight track cars for enthusiasts who know the difference between an electronic LSD and a mechanical LSD. It’s been in a battle with Westfield and other track-day manufacturers for years and, if we’re honest, has always been on top of the pile. This is thanks, mostly, to its ability to create cars which handle perfectly. Sure, its designs can be dubbed as old-fashioned, but you can’t deny how a Caterham drives; it’s fantastically impressive!
You have quite a bit of choice nowadays when buying a new or used Caterham. They have expanded their model line-up so that it’s not just British enthusiasts who buy their cars; but foreign drivers, too. Their most incredible motor would be the Superlight RS500. This car was featured on Top Gear and boasts a seriously ridiculous power to weight ratio of 520bhp-per-tonne, which is Bugatti Veyron rivalling. Its speed around a track beggars belief; you’d be hard pushed to find a quicker track day car – it’s that good!
If you want something a little more manageable, the Caterham CSR is ideal. It’s still ridiculous quick, but features slightly more creature comforts than the RS500, along with a more comfortable ride. As you may know, Caterham has always based its cars off the legendary Lotus Seven – that’s why they all look alike – but while it shares similar design features, to two respective cars couldn’t be more apart.
Caterham is a master of its craft. Able to take on established supercar manufacturers and beat them on the track; it’s hard to fault British engineering on this scale when you consider what the company has to work with.
Since billionaire Tony Fernandes came into the picture, Caterham seems to be going from strength to strength and now, with F1 technology available, who would bet against them selling hundreds, even thousands, more cars each year? With the brand getting out there on TV screens to millions of people, it’s surely going to help Caterham sell more used cars and improve its brand awareness in the US, Asia and the rest of Europe.
The future looks bright for Caterham, so don’t feel like they’re a company who can’t provide you with a serious motor; they can and you will be impressed!
