The prestigious World Car of the Year award is due to be announced next month at the New York International Auto Show. The shortlist of final candidates looks like this:

Ford Mustang

It's rare that such a performance-focused car wins these kinds of awards, which tend to look at wider virtues, but Ford has thrown everything at the new Mustang to give it more global appeal - including producing it in right hand drive format for the first time.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The C-Class is an incredibly competent and refined car but is, arguably, rather boring compared to the likes of the Mustang. It's also incredibly similar to the cheaper VW Passat, which could see buyers reluctant to shell out extra just for the prestige of the silver star badge.

Volkswagen Passat

The Passat has already taken the European Car of the Year title in a landslide win. Again it's not exciting but boasts a premium quality fit and finish for excellent value.

BMW i8

In the Luxury Car of the Year category, the BMW i8 is a slightly controversial contender. It's very impressive but more at home in the Green or Performance categories.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Surely the favourite in the Luxury Car category, the S-Class is an example in virtuoso car making, that should leave Rolls-Royce execs slightly nervous.

Range-Rover Autobiography Black LWB

Even so, the S-Class could yet be pushed aside in the Luxury Car category by probably the most magnificent Range Rover yet...

BMW M3 and M4

BMW's M series are always an obvious contender for Performance Car of the Year - maybe a bit too obvious next to the competition...

Jaguar F-Type R Coupe

A fabulous combination of modern technology and pant wettingly exciting performance, the Coupe is a more refined and entertaining version of the more raw F-Type R Roadster.

Mercedes-AMG GT

Filling the shoes of the much beloved SLS AMG looked like an impossible task, but Mercedes has pulled it off with the sublime AMG GT. Finally, Mercedes could have a serious rival to the Porsche 911 on its hands.

Green Car of the Year

The BMW i8 could and should be the first supercar to take the Green Car title. Its rivals for the award, which include the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug In Hybrid and VW Golf GTE, are both good but light years behind the BMW in sophistication.

World Car Design

There's an easy favourite in this category, too, in the Citroen C4 Cactus, which is as funky as it is practical. Its competitors are the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the new Volvo XC90.
