Winter Wheels – getting into a 4x4 this month

As the weather turns, lets look at choices for handling this winter’s weather.

I’m not sure if you have driven what is called a ‘4x4’ – a vehicle where power is sent equally to each of the four wheels, ensuring that you stay safe on the road if one of the wheels loses traction due to slippery conditions. From personal experience it really is a genuinely safer way of dealing with tricky winter conditions – and given that many 4x4 choices are used for carrying family members it makes it all the more important

There are lots of 4x4 cars out there – however many are associated with frightening service and repair bills. However if you make the right choice it’s a great option both for safer driving and for economical motoring

Here is an overview of the best value 4x4 choices available on RAC Cars this week:

Nissan Qashqai - Considered the car that gave birth to the crossover market the Qashqai has been one of the top selling models in the UK for some time. This 4x4 example from RAC Approved Dealer Billing Car Centre is under £10,000.

Dacia Duster – I always think of that rather annoying advert ‘another one drives a Duster’ to the tune of Queen’s Another one bites the dust. Forgetting the advert, the Duster represents excellent value for money in its class. This example with just over 20000 miles on the clock is a bargain at under £9000.

Renault Kadjar – A relative newcomer to the crossover market but already one with awards under its belt. Buying new the prices range from £22000 - £25000, but there are some excellent deals to be had on nearly new. This 2016 model is a great example.

Land Rover Range Rover – When I think of 4x4 the vehicle that immediately springs to mind is the Range Rover. It’s Land Rover’s flagship model and it’s come in many forms over the years. It is the ultimate 4x4 and there are some bargains to be had. This one for £4500 is a great example.

Wishing you a week of happy, safe and economical driving
