What Coupe to buy for £10,000?

By raccars Published

RAC Cars is offering a big-money prize of £10,000 to one lucky reader, to spend on a dream car of their choice. It means the market is wide open and any of the quality cars advertised on RAC Cars could be yours if you won. Here’s our tips if you fancy a sporty coupe…

A coupe is an indulgence for many people, while others will only ever buy this type of car: it’s a variety of car that, thanks to its sporty lines and focus on two passengers rather than the entire family, offers a great value way into ‘grand tourer-style’ motoring.

We Brits really love coupes. We have made models such as the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Audi A5 real stalwarts of their respective ranges – and as green tax pressures have made thirsty sporting petrol engines more expensive to run, so manufacturers have responded with low CO2 diesels to ensure they continue to thrive.

Coupes are enthusiast’s cars that don’t impose huge compromises on other motorists and delivery plenty of ownership satisfaction to all. They’re a great way to spend a £10,000 prize: so, here are our top 10 coupes that you could buy for £10k…

BMW 3 Series Coupe

What you’ll get for £10,000: 2007-2008 model
The models you should look for: 330i, 335i, 320d

Why you should buy it: Classy looks, superb engines and a brilliant chassis make the 3 Series an extremely covetable machine to live with. It’s not the cheapest car around but it’s well worth it, setting high standards and always proving a real delight to drive.

Smart Fortwo

What you’ll get for £10,000: 2013 model
The models you should look for: Passion mhd, Passion cdi

Why you should buy it: Micro-sized city car packs in top-line Mercedes-Benz build standards within a two-seat compartment that’s far roomier than you’d expect. Even the boot is decent. It sips fuel and the engines are punchy, but driving it smoothly is an acquired art and the ride is stiff.

Audi A5

What you’ll get for £10,000: 2008-2009 model The models you should look for: 2.0 TFSI, 2.7 TDI

Why you should buy it: Audi’s sleek rival to the BMW 3 Series Coupe isn’t quite as driver-pleasing but it is engineered to similar standards and has a rapid engine range of its own. The highlight is the interior, which is impeccably finished and a delight to sit in.

Audi TT

What you’ll get for £10,000: 2007-2008 model
The models you should look for: 2.0 TFSI

Why you should buy it: The Audi TT was the coupe that really brought momentum to the sector back in the late 1990s. A design classic with an interior that’s just as elegant, £10,000 will buy a second-generation model which has a strong range of turbo petrol and, if you’re lucky, diesel engines. Seek out a quattro four-wheel drive model for the most secure handling and all-year-round grip.

Volvo C30

What you’ll get for £10,000: 2010 model
The models you should look for: 1.6D, D2, 2.0D, D3

Why you should buy it: Volvo’s small hatch was inspired by the leftfield Volvo 480 Coupe of the 1980s, but this one was much more modern. Not strictly a coupe – most were sold with 1.6-litre diesel and petrol engines – but it has all the coupe looks and feels special from inside too. Reliable and easy to drive, prices are looking very tempting now.

Mercedes CLC

What you’ll get for £10,000: 2008-2009 model
The models you should look for: 180 K, 220 CDI

Why you should buy it: The three-door hatchback version of the Mercedes C-Class saloon, this used to be called the C-Class Sport Coupe prior to a very successful facelift in 2008. It’s perhaps the cheapest way into a modern rear-drive Mercedes, with strong diesel and petrol engines plus all the super-high levels of build and solidity you associate with the brand.

Volkswagen Scirocco

What you’ll get for £10,000: 2009 model
The models you should look for: 2.0 TSI, 2.0 TDI

Why you should buy it: Volkswagen revived the Scirocco name from the 1980s with this three-door hatchback coupe. As before, it’s based on the Volkswagen Golf; as that’s one of the best family hatchbacks you can buy, it ensures the Scirocco is a great car. Favourites are the TSI petrol models, particularly the high-performance Scirocco R. Highly appealing.

Honda CR-Z

What you’ll get for £10,000: 2010-2011 model
The models you should look for: Sport, GT

Why you should buy it: The Honda CR-Z is a coupe with a difference… because it’s also a fuel-saving hybrid green car. Honda pairs a 1.5-litre engine with an integrated electric motor to provide a turbo-style performance boost without the fuel economy penalty. That’s clever – but the smartest part is how unique the CR-Z looks. Truly a standout star.

Renault Laguna Coupe

What you’ll get for £10,000: 2010-2011 model
The models you should look for: 2.0 dCi 150

Why you should buy it: The Renault Laguna Coupe wasn’t a popular model but this means the resultant steep depreciation has made it a bit of a bargain today. And it deserves a look because it’s an understated, shapely car with an excellent chassis – it’s a very good machine to drive. Bag a bargain.

Vauxhall Astra GTC

What you’ll get for £10,000: 2012 car
The models you should look for: 1.4T

Why you should buy it: Vauxhall has given the current-generation Astra three-door a rakish coupe bodystyle, and called it GTC: it thus warrants inclusion in our coupe chooser list, not least because a few years’ depreciation has brought it into our £10,000 price bracket. If you choose well, you’ll even pick up one with the firm’s Lifetime Warranty in tact. Fun to drive, it’s well worth consideration.
