What 7-Seater Car Should You Buy?

Finding a 7-seater is easy, but finding a good one is not – which may explain why so many people look for advice on the subject in the RAC Forum. These multipurpose vehicles are used primarily to ferry children around, as well as to store the shopping and various toys invariably collected throughout the day.

Finding a car that makes the kids happy and also provides an enjoyable driving experience, good practicality and affordability is a pretty tough job. To make it a bit easier, we’ve put together a list of five of the best 7-seaters on the used car market today.

Kia Sorento

Reliability is the word that comes to mind with this popular SUV. The first-generation models were defined by it. The second-generation models built style on top of it. And the latest third-generation models stay true to that reputation, added high-end tech, and yet still adhering to the other great defining characteristic of the Kia Sorento: affordability.

There are nearly-new models of the Kia Sorento available on RAC Cars for upwards of £30,000, including the 2.2-litre diesel engine CRDI KX model with an automatic gearbox. To put that into affordability terms, you’ll pay the same for a 7-seater 2011 Range Rover Vogue with 42,000 more miles. This kind of value appears throughout the Kia Sorento range.

At the lower end, you can pick up a 2005 or 2006 Kia Sorento for less than £1,500, fitted with a 2.5-litre CRDi diesel engine. Also among the thousands of used Kia Sorentos at RAC Cars is the brilliant 2.5-litre Diesel CRD XY ‘09 model. You can expect to find it with leather seats and less than 60,000 miles for around £9,000.

Citroen Grand C4 Picasso

With the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, you get the 500+ litres of storage space and practicality that’s expected in this class of 7-seater cars. What really makes the Citroen stand out, though, is its style. We first noticed that ‘jet cockpit’ cabin when it arrived in the UK in 2007, when we wrote a review on RAC Drive.

Since then, this affordable family car has streamlined further, with smaller window pillars and more defined aerodynamics. The Citroen Grand Picasso is a brilliant 7-seater vehicle, and our own expert reviewer, June Neary, is a big fan: “Were I buying in this sector, I’d feel I couldn’t afford to ignore it.”

You can find the latest Blue HDI used Citroen Grand C4 Picasso models for around £25,000 on RAC Cars. That’s a full-specification 7-seater with an HD Panasonic centre console and alloy wheels.

If you’re on a smaller budget, keep the ‘07 Citroen Picasso in mind. You can purchase one for less than £5,000 with a reliable 1.6 HDI diesel engine and manual gearbox. There are actually quite a few other options to consider if you’re looking for a family car under £5,000. However, you’ll be lucky to do better than this 5-Star NCAP safety-rated 7-seater.

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

Long recognised as the ‘smart buy’ by industry experts, the Vauxhall Zafira is especially clever when running on its economic 1.6 CDTI engine. Intelligence was also noted in the deceptive space of the earlier models: 1999-2005. It really was impressive how Vauxhall put seven seats so comfortably in a car based on the sporty Astra.

If we concentrate on the ultra-economical 1.6 CDTI engine, there’s real value to be had. We found a 2011 model for less than £9,000, which is good value when you consider the much-lauded economical diesel engine on board. The money you can expect to save on fuel, in fact, prompted our very own Jonathan Crouch to say the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer was where the ‘smart money’ was in the 7-seater market.

SEAT Alhambra

In 2015, on RAC Drive, the SEAT Alhambra was rated as the best full-size MPV on British roads. The ride is comfortable and it handles well for its class, which puts it at the front of a sector under threat from sportier crossovers. Even the older models do well on the roads, while also giving your children space to stretch their legs and store their toys.

For the 2.0-litre S TDi CR model, which we rate so highly, expect to pay north of £15,000. At about a third of that price, you can find many used SEAT Alhambra 2.0-litre DPF ecomotive models. The engine is economical with a bit of bite, and its Renault Espace-inspired shape will always have a special place on UK roads.

Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 combines seven seats with a bold and sporty design, moving this category even further away from the old elongated body shapes. With this luxury Swedish SUV, you get a sporty drive framed with a solidly built interior. This interior took a big step forward in the updated version, with intelligently designed seats that fold away to make more boot space, plush new leather upholstery, and a generally more luxurious feel.

That being said about the new Volvo XC90 model, the Swedish manufacturers enjoyed huge success with the first generation, with demand far higher than initially expected.

There’s really good value to be found now that the market for used Volvo XC90s has had time to mature since the line started in 2002. We found ’05 Special Edition models at below £8,000, for example, powered by the excellent 2.5-litre D5 diesel engine behind an automatic gearbox.
