Kia sports saloon shown topping 150mph as countdown begins to a possible Detroit launch.

A clip has been released showing Kia’s first sports saloon going at more than 150mph at the Nürburgring in Germany and the preview has fuelled speculation that the 2017 Kia GT will debut at next month’s Detroit Motor Show.

The Korean brand has revealed virtually no details about the GT but the new video and information released with it suggests that a major focus is being placed on performance, track potential and driver enjoyment.

It is believed that the Kia GT will feature a rear-wheel drive system and will utilise the four-cylinder 315bhp engine used in the concept GT4 Stinger, which is thought to have been shelved. There should also be a diesel version of the new Kia GT for the European market, including the UK. This is likely to be powered by the same 2.2-litre 197bhp diesel unit that can be found in the Hyundai Santa Fe and there is speculation that the GT will be available with a less powerful four-cylinder petrol unit. A flagship V8 petrol is also a possibility.

It is thought that the GT is based upon a shortened variant of the Hyundai Genesis platform. At the forefront of its development is Albert Biermann, who runs Hyundai’s N performance sector and is a former BMW M division senior engineer.

Kia’s performance is on track

The newly-released video shows the Kia GT hitting speeds in excess of 150mph but it is thought that the car’s top speed may be even higher. The video also shows the GT’s odometer reading 13,164km, which is approximately 8,180 miles. This indicates the extent of the testing that the GT has already undergone.

The Kia GT has been spotted on a number of occasions at Germany’s Nürburgring, where Kia and its sister firm Hyundai test a range of up-coming cars, including the Hyundai i30 N, which looks set to be a competitor for the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Kia and Hyundai have a development and engineering centre at the ‘ring.

Snap shot of information

A website dedicated to Kia news recently posted what it claimed to be the first ever photo of the Kia GT without a disguise. The shot is believed to have been leaked by Kia itself. The side-on shot reveals the styling of the GT, which was one of at least four prototypes. Its features include sharp-looking headlamps, large and elaborate alloys and a rakish roofline.

It is clear that its creation has been influenced by the 2011 Kia GT concept as there are similarities in overall shape and in what can be seen of the styling at the front. However, not all of the concept's features have been carried over. These include the concept’s front intake housings which appeared to float and its back rear-hinged doors.

Pricing for the Kia GT

Unsurprisingly, given the lack of detailed information released about the upcoming Kia GT, its makers have not revealed any official details on pricing. It is known, however, that the car will sit above the Optima and take pole position in the Kia range.

The should mean that the GT will be positioned as a rival to a range of upmarket models, including the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the BMW 3 Series and the Audi A4. It also gives an indication that the price of the GT should be around £30,000.

It is not expected to hit the showrooms until at least next Summer but, the nature of the latest preview suggests that Kia plans to trickle out further details prior to its official reveal.
