What Car? Magazine's 'Car of the Year' awards have seen the latest Skoda Fabia take the top spot, 15 years after the original Fabia did the same. The annual awards ceremony took place at London's Grosvenor House Hotel and rewarded cars from a number of different market sectors, as well as the overall winner.

The Skoda Fabia took the overall best car award and won the small car category. Judges claimed that they could find no major weaknesses in the Fabia and were impressed with its competitive pricing. The Fabia's combination of flexible and punchy performance were commended, along with its fuel economy. The judging panel also noted that its interior was more spacious and practical than some of its main rivals, such as the VW Polo and Ford Fiesta. The generous array of modern technology fitted as standard also won a number of points for the Czech supermini.

The awards also named the forthcoming Honda HR-V compact SUV as the most eagerly anticipated new car launch. The HR-V will be taking on the market leading Nissan Juke when it arrives in the spring. For the first time, an award was given for safety features, which went to the new Land Rover Discovery Sport, a much hyped replacement for its Freelander model. This was a joint award with Thatcham Research, which is the only Euro NCAP crash testing facility in Britain.

Audi put in a very impressive showing at this year's awards, taking three titles: 'Coupe of the Year' for the TT, best electric car for the A3 Sportback e-tron plug in hybrid and 'Convertible of the Year' for the A3 Cabriolet.

Hyundai's i10 took the best city car title, the Ford Mondeo was named the best estate car, while Skoda took another award for best family car, with the Octavia. The executive car title went to the BMW 520d SE, best luxury car the Mercedes-Benz S350 Bluetec L SE Line and the best hot hatch was the Ford Fiesta ST-2.

There were no surprises in the best small SUV category, taken by the mighty Nissan Qashqai, while the Range Rover Sport was another predictable winner for the large SUV category. The Citroen Grand C4 Picasso also won't raise any eyebrows as the best MPV but the Porsche Boxster managed to beat out some very serious competition as the best sports car.
