While manufacturers are not obliged to submit their cars to Euro NCAP for safety testing, they know that safety is a big selling point. The latest round of crash test performance results have just been released by Euro NCAP and the following cars are currently found to be the safest in their class.

Safest Supermini

It's confusing to find the new Suzuki Vitara classed as a supermini but, nonetheless, this is what Euro NCAP has done, and awarded it five stars for safety. The Skoda Fabia was the previous safest supermini by Euro NCAP standards, and the only car in its class of fourteen which were tested to be awarded five stars in 2014. It was followed by the Mazda 2, which achieved the highest score ever for a supermini in the pedestrian safety category.

Safest Small MPV

The only car in this category to be tested this year is the Fiat 500X, which fell only just behind the VW Golf SV. The Golf performed better in the safety assist features category but scored lower than the Fiat 500X on pedestrian safety. Both were about equal in the adult and child occupancy categories, but the Fiat only managed four stars to the Golf's five.

Safest Large MPV

The Renault Espace put in a solid performance for a five star rating - unfortunately, it hasn't been released in the UK.

Safest Small family car

Tested in 2014, the Qashqai scored well in the adult, child and safety assist categories and achieved five stars overall.

Safest Large family car

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class topped its class with five stars in 2014, but it will be interesting to see if it is toppled by the new Jaguar XE this year.

Safest Executive car

Maserati is not often a name associated with car safety awards but the brand's Ghibli saloon was a star performer in 2013, earning five stars overall and an excellent 95% in the adult occupancy category.

Safest Small off roader

Tested in 2014, the new Land Rover Discovery Sport had no trouble beating rivals to the top of its class, scoring particularly well for adult occupancy protection.

Safest Large off roader

The seven seater Hyundai Santa Fe is the class leader for safety but its test results date back to 2012 and it is likely to be superseded soon by other large SUVs.

Safest Alternative fuel

The Lexus NX topped the class with five stars and was closely followed by the Tesla Model S.

Safest Sports Roadster

The new Audi TT managed only four stars under 2015's stringent new test standards, because the back seats are too tight for approved child seats...
