Paris Motor Show 2014: Volvo XC90

By raccars Published

Away from all the supercars, it’s fair to say the Volvo XC90 is one of the stars of the 2014 Paris Motor Show. It’s proven that Volvo can do premium SUV, in its own unique way that will, we’re sure, steal customers from the likes of the Audi Q7 and BMW X5.

After 12 years selling the original Volvo XC90, the latest model is well overdue.

Fortunately, first impressions are extremely good. The XC90 is the first car to be based on Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture, which has the potential to house electric motors without compromising on practicality. In typical Volvo fashion, it’s overloaded with safety kit, and has the tech to tackle German rivals head on.

The top-of-the-range model is the new T8 model, which combines a supercharged and turbocharged engine with an electric motor. In total, the T8 produces 400hp while emitting just 60g/km of CO2, making it road tax free. Proof that you can have your cake and eat it.

Cheaper engines will be available, with a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel units.

The interior is wonderfully Swedish and utterly premium, on par with anything offered by German rivals. Highlights include a massive touchscreen infotainment system on the centre console and a genuine seven-seat layout.

A limited edition XC90 has already gone on sale, with all 1,927 cars sold out within two days. Not bad going for a £70,000 car that has yet to be driven. You can expect more reasonable prices for the new XC90 when it goes on sale next year, with the range starting from £40,000.
