For the super-virile or those without televisions, even the roomiest estate or traditional family car can't accommodate the number of bodies that need transporting around. In the olden days this used to mean buying some kind of minibus, but fortunately, the modern world has access to a number of seven-seater vehicles boasting van-like proportions in a distinctly car-like form. Here are 10 possibilities for when five seats won't cover it:

Volkswagen Touran

The Touran is well-built and one of the nicest driving MPVs out there. The cabin is well-designed, practical and comfortable, although maybe not quite as large as some of its rivals.

Land Rover Discovery 4x4

This 4x4 will take you off-road in as much comfort and style as it handles the blacktop, while comfortably seating seven, so is more versatile than more traditional MPVs. However, you get what you pay for and the Discovery is expensive, both to buy and to run.

Audi Q5 4x4

The Audi Q5 is impressive for its build quality and sheer size. It's more luxurious and better equipped than most of the other options but the ride and refinement aren't as good as you'd expect from such an expensive vehicle.

Toyota Prius+ People Carrier

The Toyota Prius+ People Carrier is the class leader in terms of eco-credentials and running costs, but performance is at best average and, for its high purchase price, the interior looks cheap. However, it is well-equipped and practical.

Vauxhall Zafira

This MPV is a fun drive and one of the cheaper options to buy but, as one of the elder statesmen of its class, is starting to show its age next to more modern rivals. It lags behind on innovative ideas but the lifetime warranty is tempting.

Hyundai Santa Fe 4x4

Another option for the adventurous. The Hyundai Santa Fe 4x4 is better on road than off but cheaper to run than alternatives.

Renault Grand Scenic

Renault have been leading the field in MPVs from the beginning and the Grand Scenic is still a strong contender. Quality and drive are impressive but less practical than some.

Ford S-Max

The Ford S-Max boasts the performance, equipment levels and versatility of far more expensive rivals. It's a great all-rounder with the one possible quibble being that the third row of seats is a bit tight for adults.

Peugeot 5008

This is a modern MPV that has learned well from the mistakes of previous models. It's versatile, stylish and very affordable.

Seat Alhambra

The Seat Alhambra is basically a badge-engineered VW Sharan, with the same spacious cabin and great build quality but a more attractive price.
