In praise of the Super Mini

ford fiesta

Last week I spent time in a new Ford Fiesta. The latest Fiesta really is an impressive car – perfectly sized for almost every trip (especially the five door version) and with lots of mod cons like electronic stability support, hill start assist and a great in-car entertainment system. What’s more, versions like the 1.6 EcoBoost can give you 0-60 in 6.9 seconds and 139 mph top speed but then return a combined fuel efficiency of nearly 48 miles per gallon!

The Fiesta falls in to a class of cars that the industry calls ‘superminis’ – the name refers to their size rather than performance, but I think it’s a great description for everything about these cars. As roads become busier, petrol prices move around and the weekly shopping trip gets smaller and more regular, expect to see even more of these cars on the roads.

Ford invented the supermini category back in 1976 when the first Fiesta was launched. It has now moved on to its seventh generation, selling over 16 Million units worldwide to make it one of Ford’s most successful lines ever. In fact it has been so successful that the last generation Fiesta was successfully launched into the North American market (and they have sold over 400,000 there, proving how popular the little car is even in that monster truck-loving country!)

You don’t have to buy a brand new Fiesta in order to get what this car has to offer. On RAC Cars this week we have nearly 14,000 Fiestas for sale - ranging from a nearly-new 2016 Titanium model for £19,000 through to a 2001 1.3 Flight model with only 80,000 miles for just £150! Take a look at www.raccars.co.uk and search for the supermini that is right for you.

Wishing you a week of happy, safe and economical driving
