Getting Away With The Family

The holiday season is upon us and with it the prospect of family getaways. Large family cars may not make up the most exciting automotive sector but they come with some pretty stringent requirements. You don't have to be stuck with an MPV or a huge estate if you prefer the idea of something more traditional, as there are plenty of capable and stylish large saloons to house a family in comfort.

Ford Mondeo

It may have made its name as the ride of choice of the travelling salesman but the Mondeo has well and truly come of age since then. It offers a very pleasant drive, combined with a comfortable cabin and newer models are impressively frugal. The large boot has plenty of room for a pram, sports equipment and a major session at the supermarket, to make this a great family all rounder.

Mazda 6

Often surprisingly overlooked, the very competent Mazda 6 has great design to go with a selection of super efficient petrol and diesel SkyActiv engines. It's a serious rival to the Mondeo's crown as the 'go to' mid range saloon. There's plenty of modern technology on display in the form of regenerative braking and a spacious cabin, while the ride is sophisticated and the equipment list generous.

Vauxhall Insignia

The Insignia has suffered from the same sort of image problems that used to plague the Mondeo but is another spacious, comfortable and practical family hauler. Go for one of the diesel engines for fuel economy and a sensible, if less than exciting, drive.

VW Passat

The Passat was once rather pedestrian but newer versions offer the sort of build quality and refinement usually seen accompanied by a premium badge. Handling is spot on and although it's shorter than it used to be, a longer wheelbase ensures the interior is actually more spacious than ever. Go for a well behaved diesel for the best combination of fuel economy and performance.

Skoda Octavia

The UK's best selling Skoda has taken up the challenge set by more established saloons with some aplomb. The 590 litre boot can hold plenty of family clutter without sacrificing cabin space, while the well thought out interior and excellent build quality demonstrates its VW Group pedigree. Again diesel is the way to go.

Peugeot 508

It's often overshadowed by bigger players in the saloon world, but the 508 is smart, well equipped and ticks all the comfort and space boxes so important in a family car. Performance won't raise any eyebrows but it's willing and reliable for standard family car duties.
