Golf R

With almost 8000 used cars to choose from – priced from £36,000 to as little as £500, we find you the best Golfs on the market

I’ve owned one Golf in my driving life so far – a 1986 C Reg Mark II in dark grey – which still has a very special place in my heart. There is something so good about Golfs – they are small enough to zip around town and fit in to any parking space, but roomy enough and powerful enough to do decent motorway trips.

Firstly a very quick history - we are currently on the 7th generation Golf, which launched in 2012 using the same underpinnings as the Audi A3, SEAT Leon and Skoda Octavia. An awful lot has changed since the Mk1 car in 1974 – you can now chose between petrol, diesel, electricity and natural gas engines (and the hybrid in-between) – however it’s still an outstanding car from just £18,000 new.

As you know RAC Cars is about used cars, so lets look at a range of Golfs at different price points:

The entry level

Personally I love the Mk5 Golf that was available between 2003-2009. It has the right combination of a modern drive, great Golf looks (in my opinion) and now an unbeatable value story. Check out this basic 114 BHP 5 door Match edition, with under 50,000 miles for a cracking £6000: View Vehicle Here

The classic

For people of a certain age, the Golf GTI is the only car they ever wanted to drive. The new Mk7 car is better than ever

Check out this car from RAC Approved Dealer Imperial Cars of Surrey – a 2 litre with Bluetooth connectivity and adaptive cruise control, under 11,000 miles in the past two years and just around £18,000: View Vehicle Here

The economic yet still fun one

VW make some of the best diesel engines going. The Golf GT TDi delivers a supreme drive whilst also returning 68.9 miles per gallon. I personally love this example from Cambridge Volkswagen in striking white and with only 33,782 on the clock for £12,450: View Vehicle Here

The top one

If you thought the GTI was the speediest of the Golfs, then be prepared to meet the ‘R’ model – a 2 litre turbo induced car that manages to deliver 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds but still returns up to 48 miles per gallon! Imperial Cars of Surrey also have one of these in a stunning Blue, more money at just under £23,000 for a 22,000 mile car but great value in my opinion: View Vehicle Here

Wishing you a week of happy, safe and economical driving.
