If you are looking for an executive saloon, these five options represent some of the best models on the market at the moment.

Executive saloons not only need to get you from A to B, but need to do so while also exuding an air of prestige, offering plenty of practical features and benefiting from a decent level of luxury. So whether you are selecting one from the company car roster, buying one new out of your own pocket, or securing a second-hand bargain, here are five models which reign supreme in this market niche.

BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series is arguably the best executive saloon around, offering better value for money than its larger stable mate the 7 Series, while giving buyers more presence on the road and greater power under the bonnet than the 3 Series. From the iconic BMW badge to the wealth of engine options, trim levels and even the M5 to provide for any speed-seekers, there is a lot to get excited about when choosing a 5 Series.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The only area in which the current 5 Series might be considered to be lacking is its exterior styling, which is not quite as assertive or interesting as some of its predecessors. And so the Mercedes E-Class is a welcome alternative, with looks that are a little more striking and a build quality that will assure long term reliability, as you would expect from this venerable German marque. Select the Bluetec-badged E-Class models for impressive fuel efficiency and plenty of power; a combination that works well for the daily commute.

Jaguar XF

The bigger brother to the XE is another good looking, well equipped executive saloon which has the benefit of British branding and unmistakable styling both inside and out. If anything the Jaguar marque outdoes its German counterparts in terms of pure reputation, especially in the UK where it is still highly prized. And the Jaguar XF backs up its heritage by offering drivers engaging, gadget-packed motoring. The 3.0 litre diesel-powered XF is a particularly compelling choice as it can achieve over 50mpg and hit 62mph in just 6.2 seconds.

Audi A6

The fact that German manufacturers dominate this list is no accident; they have perfected the art of making executive saloons over the course of decades and the current Audi A6 represents the pinnacle of the country’s achievements so far, especially in terms of styling and power. The twin-turbo 3.0 litre diesel-powered A6 is a good choice for those who want to ease past every other driver on the motorway without ever feeling that the car is struggling to maintain its pace.

Tesla Model S

While the Tesla Model S is still a relatively rare site in the UK and costs quite a bit more than its traditional competitors, this electric-powered executive saloon has nevertheless won critical acclaim since its launch and is potentially the most environmentally friendly vehicle in this segment of the market. When fully charged it can cover 275 miles before it needs to be plugged in and it boasts acceleration and torque which can outdo many sports cars. Added to the mix are some truly impressive autonomous driving capabilities, meaning that the Model S is one of the few cars on sale today which can steer, brake and avoid obstacles with no driver input.

The good news about executive saloon cars is that of course you do not have to opt for brand new models, with the used market offering well maintained second hand examples fresh from fleet use. Just remember to carry out a comprehensive history check to make that sure you are getting the best possible deal.
