The European Car of the Year competition has been running since 1964 and celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Barcelona Motor Show, with a display of every winning vehicle since the awards began.

The current judging process begins in the last quarter of the year preceding the awards and this year involves a 58 member jury from 23 countries. Any new model car is eligible for entry as long as it is available to buy in at least five European countries and can expect an annual sales volume of at least 5,000 units.

A shortlist of seven vehicles is drawn up, from which jury members can allot 25 points to at least five cars, with a maximum score of ten points for any one vehicle. Points allocation must also be justified in a statement.

This year's 32 entrants have been narrowed down to seven, with the jury brief to find the most outstanding new car to have gone on sale in the last year. The shortlist for 2014 includes:

BMW i3

The German giant's first model from a new electric and hybrid range has impressed consumers with its stylish design and driving experience. The EV version has a range of up to 100 miles and feels like a conventional rear wheel drive car behind the wheel.

Citroen C4 Picasso

Now in its second generation, the current C4 Picasso is more upmarket than its predecessor and unusually stylish for an MPV. It's certainly a worthy contender against its most obvious rivals, the Renault Scenic and Ford C-Max.

Mazda 3

In a marked step up in both style and quality from Mazda, the new 3 is one of the most practical and efficient models in its class – thanks in part to use of the company's high tech SkyActiv architecture.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

It's no easy task living up to the 'best car in the world' label, but the S-Class gives it a very good try. The high quality fit and finish are characteristic of the manufacturer, both in form and function.

Peugeot 308

Upgrades in size and quality are noticeable compared to the first generation 308, which still slightly lacks the agility and refinement of some of its competitors.

Skoda Octavia

It's not the most glamorous vehicle but the Octavia is extremely spacious, competent and practical. It has won legions of fans for its quality on a budget ethos.

Tesla Model S

The groundbreaking all electric car is setting the tone for future vehicles in its class. It's a proper luxury saloon with the performance of conventionally powered cars.
