Most cars are defined by rather prescriptive criteria such as speed, price, cargo and capacity; however there are others that may not stand out in terms of style or performance but are quite simply entertaining and worthy of ownership because they make you smile.

Mini

The modern Mini is almost as engaging as the original. It is cute to look at rather than elegant, the handling is giddy and giggly, and the whole represents a spirit of freedom. The Mini is the epitome of fun motoring.

Mazda MX-5

The MX-5 has won applause among the press and public since its release a quarter of a century ago. It has become the world's best-selling sports roadster thanks to a combination of virtues, not least of which is its lively driving dynamics. It is also a very good-looking car without being intimidating.

Fiat Panda Cross

This cult favourite is gratuitously expensive for a Fiat Panda; however, it is a very diverting piece of kit and is able to outperform a Land Rover in the mud and without any pretensions.

Austin Healey Sprite

This car has a face! From the front, the happy little Sprite appears to be smiling at you. What is more charming in a car than that?

Nissan GT-R

The ferocious performance of the GT-R is enough to make any petrol-head happy in its own right, but the fact it costs half the price of super cars that struggle to keep up with it is even more thrilling.

Citroen C4 Cactus

Evoking the spirit of the 2CV, the C4 Cactus is designed in a very compelling modern style that saw Citroen re-assess the way we look at and use cars today. The result is super-practical and also rather easy on the eye in its own unique way.

Renault Twingo

The newest Twingo boasts the quirky charm of the original model paired with a ridiculous rear-wheel drive, rear-engine layout. It has the turning circle of a pushchair and is a scream to drive.

Ford Fiesta ST

This is a burning hot hatch, arousing the sort of driving pleasure that spawned the sector in the first place. It is light and precise on the surface, but the heart of a lion beats beneath its bonnet.

VW Beetle

It is not a car for performance purists, but the Beetle arouses the same sort of guilty pleasure as dancing along to Rick Astley and singing into your hairbrush in front of the mirror.
