The Grand Tour

Top Gear trio to film The Grand Tour in front of a live audience in North Yorkshire.

The worldwide filming tour of Top Gear’s famous trio of presenters is coming home - to North Yorkshire. James May, Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson will swap their previous filming locations of California and South Africa for Whitby. And, in a twist to proceedings, it will mean a return to the county in which the fracas that led to Clarkson’s departure from Top Gear occurred.

Programme makers offered fans of the trio the chance to watch the show being filmed in the seaside resort and Amazon has been flooded with applications from around the globe. The company has revealed that people from over 100 countries filled out an application form in a bid to witness The Grand Tour first hand.

Applications were only open for a period of 48 hours and fans had to try and explain why they believed they should be chosen to attend the filming. They were also asked to tell Amazon which one of the programme’s presenters was their favourite.

Global demand to be part of The Grand Tour

The vice president of Amazon Video EU, Jay Marine, said the company had been ‘thrilled’ by the enthusiasm of fans who wanted to see the very first British recording of the new TV show. He deemed it ‘amazing’ that the presenting trio could attract interest from fans living in over 100 countries.

Fans' applications were also received from every part of the UK. The highest percentage came from Amazon customers based in Yorkshire, who accounted for almost a fifth of all entries (19 per cent). Yorkshire was followed by fans in the South East, where 16 per cent of the applicants were to be found.

Next in line was the North West with a ten per cent application rate but figures dropped outside of England, with just four per cent being Scottish customers wanting to see the recording, three per cent in Wales and two per cent in Northern Ireland.

Marine said that fans who had been chosen to see The Grand Tour being filmed would be contacted in the coming weeks. The weekly show launches on Amazon Prime Video on November 18.

The Whitby recording will see May, Hammond and Clarkson filming before a live audience. Filming has previously taken place in California, USA, and Johannesburg in South Africa.

Fish, chips and cars at the seaside

Marine had invited fans to join the presenting trio in historic Whitby for ‘thrills and spills’, together with fish and chips at the seaside. Fans had until the end of September to get their applications in. The chosen audience will get to see Clarkson, Hammond and May in The Grand Tour’s giant tent, which will be situated in Whitby on October 13 and 14.

After being ‘blown away’ by ticket demand from customers who wanted to attend the recording in California and Johannesburg, Marine said that Amazon was excited by the prospect of ‘the guys..coming home’.

The leader of Scarborough Borough Council, Cllr Derek Bastiman, said that the authority was delighted that Whitby has been chosen as the programme’s UK location, believing it to be a fantastic publicity opportunity for the town. Television and filming already offers the area a huge economic boost, adding at least £20 million to Yorkshire bank balances.

Cllr Bastiman said that the show would promote Whitby as a destination and would also further boost the local economy, with visitors spending money shopping, eating and staying in local accommodation. It is believed that the show could bring up to £20,000 into the local economy for each day of filming. It will no doubt further enhance Whitby’s reputation which has already benefited from playing host to the filming of Victoria, ITV’s hit drama, in recent months.
