Everyone remembers their first car no matter how battered, unreliable or unfashionable it was. It marked an iconic moment in your car history, and was probably given a name and a set of furry dice.

It’s also possible that the choice was very limited due to budget, running costs, insurance and availability. Today, though, this has all changed with thousands of cheap, used cars for sale at RAC Cars.

All four of the cars featured here would make ideal first cars for inexperienced drivers, as well as reliable runarounds for motorists living in urban areas. They are all compact which makes them easy to handle, zip around the town and also to park.

You can expect all of them to be fairly economical and cheap to insure, while still having attractive design features.

There really are some outstanding contenders in the under £1,000 category so let’s take a look at them in a bit more detail.

Vauxhall Corsa

red-vauxhall-corsa

The stylish Vauxhall Corsa is often used by driving instructors to teach their students. This is mainly because it’s compact dimensions make it easy to manoeuvre and park. It’s also a smooth and very easy vehicle to drive.

The Vauxhall Corsa isn’t just for new drivers, though. One of the most seen vehicles on Britain’s roads is popular with thousands of drivers because of its many virtues, variety of styles and not least because cheap Corsa models are plentiful, with thousands of used Vauxhall Corsas for sale.

Vauxhall Corsa - What Do You Need to Know?

  • Brilliant fuel economy
  • Not a great deal of power/li>
  • Low servicing costs
  • Quite cramped in the back
  • Spacious in the front for its class

Performance

The diesel powered cars are more frugal and you can expect to see combined fuel economy into the 60 MPG’s, but they can be quite sluggish. The petrol models are more spritely although less economical (average MPG in the low to mid 40’s).

Our top tip when buying a used car, to ensure that the car has not been hindered in any way, would be to check the car’s history by having an RAC Inspection Check, as many will have been driven as hire, fleet or demo cars.

We discovered used Vauxhall Corsa models from as little as £140, so why not have a look for yourself on RAC Cars.

Nissan Micra

sliver-nissan-micra

The Nissan Micra has come a long way since it first graced the showrooms back in the early 1980s, when it was recognised as a fun-filled supermini. The car has evolved over the generations but has always been a quirky and popular vehicle in the UK market. In recent years, the shape has broadened and the drive has become more stable and smooth.

Nissan Micra - What Do You Need to Know?

  • Funky design that has achieved cult status
  • The engine can be noisy
  • Cheap to run
  • Not the best ride on older models
  • Really good visibility for a small car

Performance and top tips

Diesel engines can achieve upwards of 60MPG, but they can be a tad sluggish. Petrol models are more fun to drive, but also more thirsty - expect to see about 40MPG. When it comes to reliability, older models can suffer from electronic and battery problems so have a good look at the MOT papers and service history.

We have used Nissan Micra models from as little as £250 on RAC Cars, so find your next car under £1000 today.

Renault Clio

red-renault-clio

The Renault Clio always seems to maintain a sense of style no matter how old it gets. Even models that are 12 years old are appealing with their distinctive body lines, good comfort levels and, perhaps most importantly, nippy driving dynamics.

Many people prefer the French run-around to the Japanese equivalents for that very reason. You will even find an article on RAC Cars comparing the Renault Clio vs Ford Fiesta.

Renault Clio - What Do You Need to Know?

  • Timeless styling
  • More expensive to service than similar cars
  • Refined handling
  • Replacement parts more expensive
  • Spacious interior for its class

Performance

Diesel engines are more economical to run and can deliver average MPG into the 60’s but these will prove more expensive to repair. Petrol-powered cars are also quite frugal with average economy of 40mpg. When it comes to reliability on older models the automatic gearbox, suspension and brakes cause the most issues.

We have used Renault Clio models from as little as £450 on RAC Cars, so find your next car under £1000 today.

Peugeot 206

blue-peugeot-206

The Peugeot 206 was one of the most popular superminis ever produced, selling more than 500,000 models in the UK alone during its years of production from 1998 to 2010.

This French runaround boasts sporty lines on the outside and a chirpy layout inside the cabin. It’s this design, somehow above it’s class in detail and aesthetics, that makes the Peugeot 206 one of the finest hatchbacks to ever set wheels on Britain's roads.

Peugeot 206 - What Do You Need to Know?

  • Lots of engine options
  • Not the most comfortable
  • Good build quality
  • Limited space in the back
  • An energetic driving dynamic

Performance

Of the hundreds of Peugeot 206 models on sale for under £1,000, even the older cars offer fairly good fuel efficiency. Petrol 206’s achieve about 40 MPG and diesel versions between 50 and 60 MPG.

HDi diesel engines were introduced from 1999 onwards and they provide superior performance and efficiency. High-end GTi models will be more expensive to insure, especially for first time drivers.

We have used Peugeot 206 models from as little as £150 on RAC Cars, so find your next car under £1000 today.

What Are Some Other Options?

Amazingly, we also have discovered the likes of the VW Beetle, Toyota Yaris, Skoda Octavia and even a Jaguar X-Type all for less than £1,000 on RAC Cars.
