Removing the legislation for daylight savings time could save lives and reduce accidents.

The road safety and breakdown cover company, GEM Motoring Assist, continues to promote the Lighter Later cause, a campaign which calls for the abolishment of daylight savings time.

The scheme which aims to introduce lighter evenings throughout the year, has plummeted off of the political agenda.

Retaining the GMT+1 time zone could potentially save 80 lives each year and prevent hundreds of serious injuries on British roads. Also, the NHS could see savings of around £138million as a direct result.

David Williams MBE, CEO of GEM Motoring Assist, said: ‘there is strong evidence to show that road accident rates continue to rise each autumn, directly after clocks go back.’

Indeed, when the scheme was trialled in Britain between 1968 and 1971, a reduction of 3% in road deaths in England and 8.6% in Scotland was recorded.

David concludes: ‘we will continue to show our support for this campaign until it finds its way back onto our agenda, which we hope is sooner rather than later.’
