Audis for sale under £2,000

By raccars Published

There’s absolutely no denying the success and popularity of Audi as a brand of choice in the UK and last year alone, the company sold 166,709 models to British buyers which equated to 6.33% of all new cars sold in the British Isles. So, it comes as little surprise to know that there are thousands of used Audi models up for grabs on the used car market.

The Audi name is synonymous with premium build quality, outstanding driving dynamics and excellent reliability. For those very reasons, the German marque competes for sales with the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar.

But even with limited funds, buyers can find their dream Audi on the used car market. Here’s our guide to the top used Audis available below £2000 on RAC Cars.

Audi A4

Audi A4 SilverThe Audi A4 has proved to be one of the most popular cars for business drivers up and down the country. That’s because there are so many models to choose from. The cars are very well built, comfortable, economical to run and are also extremely reliable.

Used Audi A4 - What Do You Need To Know?

● Strong German manufacturing and safety

● Comfortable and room for five adults

● Generously-sized boot space

● Excellent fuel economy from diesel engines

● Available with manual or automatic gearbox

● The suspension is quite hard

Performance

A budget of £2,000 should secure a decent Audi A4 produced between 2004 and 2008. A used Audi A4 is available in trims including Saloon, Estate and Sport, and there is a massive selection of engines to choose from – 10 petrol and nine diesel to be exact. The diesels offer far better fuel efficiency with average mpg reaching the mid-50s.

Many A4 cars will have started life in the fleet market, so check carefully for the mileage, dents, bumper damage and scratched alloys. It may be worth buying an RAC Vehicle Check to check the history of a particular used Audi A4.

Audi A3

Audi a3

Buyers looking to purchase an Audi A3 on the used car scene will be able to choose between a Hatchback and Sportback body style. The former is the more compact of the two designs and the Sportback is more practical for families who require additional boot space and extra room in the back seats.

Used Audi A3 - What Do You Need To Know?

● Good range of engines to select from

● Economical diesel engines

● Generous boot capacity (350 litres on the Hatchback, 370 litres on the Sportback)

● Strong reliability

● Can be noisy

● Premium design within the cabin – quality upholstery and soft-touch materials

● High resale values

● Small rear space

Performance

Audi introduced its second generation A3 in 2003 and a budget of £2k would secure one of those models. The car is sold as a three-door hatchback, five-door sportback or, from 2008 onwards, as a cabriolet.

Petrol engines tended to dominate the line-up although Audi did introduce some impressive diesel engines. Expect to see an average of 40 mpg from diesel engines with petrol variants around the 35 mpg mark.

Be mindful of insurance costs as they can be as high as group 11 rising to group 18 for high-end models. Diesel models were recalled in 2004 to fix leaky fuel pumps, but otherwise the car is a very good buy.

Audi A8

The Audi A8 comes with limousine-size dimensions and also includes all the comfort and refinement expected from such a car. Admittedly, with a slender budget to play with, the choice of A8 models will be limited, but there are certainly many older, used models being sold on RAC Cars.

Used Audi A8 - What Do You Need To Know?

● Loses value quickly

● Room for three adults to stretch out in the back

● Lots of headroom

● Good sized boot

● Available as a long-wheelbase model too, which is even more spacious

● A large car to park

● Good levels of on-board equipment

● Repair costs can be expensive

● Available with all-wheel-drive quattro system

Performance

Choosing an A8 will mean incurring some hefty running costs. Insurance is rated at least group 18 and fuel economy is not impressive ranging from 28 mpg on the 3.2 and 4.2 petrol engines to 32 mpg on the 3.0 diesel.

There is another price to pay for driving round in a luxury car and that’s servicing. For starters, the aluminium bodywork is very expensive to repair, the gearboxes and clutches will need replacing after time and the electrics can be temperamental.

Audi A2

Audi A2

The Audi A2 may look like a small hatchback, but it’s deceptively roomy inside with space for four occupants (five at a bit of a squeeze) plus a good-sized boot. The car’s compact dimensions make it ideal for driving in busy city traffic and easy to park. But it is also a capable performer out on faster roads too.

Used Audi A2 - What Do You Need To Know?

● Well equipped

● Premium, solid build quality

● Low running costs

● Practical with a good-sized cabin and boot

● The ride can be a little bouncy

● Good all-round visibility

● Cabin is well insulated against road surface noise

● Low insurance costs

● Expensive body repairs due to aluminum shell

● Holds its value well

Performance

The Audi A2 was in production between 1999 and 2005 and brought a real touch of class to the small hatchback segment thanks to its high quality build and stylish interior. It was also very refined to drive. Engine options are 1.4 and 1.6 petrol units plus 1.2, and 1.4 diesel options. Combined fuel economy for petrol models is about 46 mpg while the diesel cars can achieve 64 mpg.

Most of the faults recorded on the A2 concern the car’s electrics, so it’s worth taking the time to check everything in the car is functioning properly.
