Along Came A Spider - Or Spyder?

The gorgeous little Alfa Romeo 4C has just been released in Spider or convertible format. The Spider or Spyder badge has been applied to various slinky, two seater sports cars over the years and essentially means a soft top convertible version - it just sounds more exotic.

Porsche Boxster Spyder

This time it's Spyder with a 'y', and it turned the already excellent Boxster into something even more wonderful. The hood mechanism is somewhat cumbersome but performance is right up there with the hard top version and it looks spectacular.

Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder

This was the first time Lambo applied the 'Spyder' tag to one of its convertibles and the result was super successful for the Italian firm. The sharp looking Gallardo Spyder was powered by a punchy V10 - and a slight spelling change - to take on the Ferrari F430 Spider.

McLaren 650S Spider

Blessed with the razor edged performance you would expect of a McLaren, this is the only convertible on the firm's books at the moment. It is marvellously engineered all round and the open top only adds to the fun.

Porsche 918 Spyder

One third of the current hypercar trio that's making the old fashioned supercar obsolete, the hybrid 918 Spyder features the most advanced automotive technology in the world. It's so ridiculously fast that you might need extra driving lessons to do it justice.

Alfa Romeo 8C Spider

A larger and arguably even more attractive version of the 4C, the 8C Spider shows exactly how Alfa Romeo built a reputation for making the best looking cars in the world. Even better, it came with a 4.7 litre V8 from Ferrari to give it as much substance as style.

Porsche 550 Spyder

The first time Porsche used the Spyder tag became famous for all the wrong reasons, when heartthrob actor James Dean had a fatal crash in his. Outside this unfortunate association, the pretty 550 Spyder had a successful racing career which helped to make Porsche a significant name in the sport.

Ferrari Daytona Spider (365 GTB/4)

The Daytona Spider was Sonny Crockett's car of choice before the Ferrari Testarossa in Miami Vice - and it has aged far better than the pastel suits and designer stubble in which he drove it. It is truly a thing of beauty.

Alfa Romeo Duetta/Spider

Another Spider to be popularised on screen, the Duetto Spider's appearance in 'The Graduate' saw it create the iconic image of the desirable Italian open top sports car.
