All-new 2017 Ford Fiesta revealed

Ford is launching a new version of Britain’s best-selling car in summer 2017. Here’s our first look

The new 2017 Ford Fiesta has been revealed at last. Eight years after the best-selling current car was uncovered, the new one is here – and Ford will be hoping this one is as much of a success as the current car, which hasn’t budged from the position of Britain’s best-selling car in years.

The new Fiesta is, design-wise, a modern evolution of the current car. Styling is a key reason why people buy today’s Fiesta and, just as Volkswagen always does with the Golf, Ford has decided not to reinvent the looks, but evolve them. However, Ford stresses, it is an all-new car.

It’s tidier and better quality: the doors shut more crisply, the panels are smoother and the appearance is richer. It’s more like a quality ‘blue oval Audi’ than ever before. Ford will be selling it in four key versions – regular models, a sporty ST-Line, a jacked-up SUV-look Active and an ultra-posh Vignale.

The Vignale is an ambitious Fiesta, which has 18-inch alloys, an exterior lavished in chrome and, inside, quilted leather seats. But Ford says it reflects the fact 6 in 10 Fiesta sales are of upper-range ones. This expensive new range-topper is simply meeting customer demand.

We like the look of the racy red ST-Line, which has smart alloys, a black-themed exterior and suitably more crisply-cut body additions. The Active is an interesting addition – whereas the ST-Line is lowered, this is raised, and endowed with tough body panels to shake off light off-road use.

The engine range at launch will be simple – a basic 1.1-litre non-turbo petrol engine, plus Ford’s renowned 1.0-litre Ecoboost turbo in a range of power outputs up to 140hp. There’s also a single diesel, a 1.5-litre TDCI, offered with up to 120hp.

A high-performance Fiesta ST model will follow.

If the exterior is an evolution, the interior is a revolution. Ford has transformed the cabin of the new Fiesta, with better quality, smarter trims, nicer seats, and, most importantly of all, the option of a smart new touchscreen infotainment system.

This is based around Ford’s latest SYNC3 system and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Our first look indicates it’s a fantastic system, one of the best in the small car sector. As people buy cars for their on-board tech these days, we expect this to become a key draw of the new Fiesta.

There’s also a lot of extra active safety tech (you can have two cameras, three radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors), and you can get a gadget that semi-autonomously parks the Fiesta without needing your hands on the wheel.

Ford’s also offering a premium sound system called B&O Play. This has 10 speakers and delivers an ‘elevated audio experience’. You can get a CD player, but it’s optional: Ford expects most will use the Spotify app that’s now available.

We don’t yet know how it drives, but we’re betting it’s going to be excellent. The current one still is, even eight years after launch. And Ford’s assured us this is better in every respect.

The new Fiesta goes on sale in the UK in June 2017. Prices are to be confirmed, but it’s likely to be a little up on the current starting price of £13,545. And if that’s now too much for you, don’t forget the Ford Ka+ is now also available…
