The winners of this year's What Car? Used Car of the Year awards have just been announced, with the Ford Focus 1.6 105 Zetec coming out on top as the overall winner. An awards ceremony took place at London's Hurlingham Club, where the winners of 13 different categories were announced. A panel of nine judges included experts from What Car? Magazine, the managing director of Warranty Direct, David Gerrans, and the managing director of Trusted Dealers, Neil Addley.

The What Car? Used Car of the Year awards are judged on all round ownership experience rather than pure performance. The Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec was considered to offer an excellent balance between performance, equipment and value for money and was named best used family car, as well as the overall winner. Britain's best selling car, the Fiesta 1.25 Zetec, took the second of three awards for Ford, this time in the best used small car category, while the Mondeo Estate 2.0 TDCi 140 Zetec completed the hat trick as best used estate.

In this, its 25th anniversary year, the Mazda MX-5 took an extremely fitting award for most fun used car, in 2.0 litre Sport guise. The What Car? Judges were particularly impressed by the dynamic driving experience and entertaining handling which have made the sporty, rear wheel drive MX-5 so popular for a quarter of a century.

The Hyundai i10's award for best used city car will only help to cement its growing reputation for excellence, with the spacious and practical interior highlighted by judges. In a fiercely competitive category, the i10 1.2 Comfort model offers the ideal combination of performance, economy and comfort.

The Citroen Grand C4 Picasso 1.6 Hdi VTR+ was named best used MPV thanks to its versatility and practicality, and was also judged to be great value for money. A second generation of the car was launched earlier this year but the award was based upon the first generation model.

Best used coupe went to the Volkswagen Scirocco 1.4 TSI, which combines sportiness with practicality, a popular winner of What Car? Awards over the years. Judges commented upon its sleek looks and entertaining drive, as well as the affordable price.

Other awards went to the BMW 3 Series Convertible 320d SE for best used open top car, the Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi Acenta for best small SUV, the Volvo XC90 2.4 D5 SE Lux for best large SUV, the Lexus IS220d SE for best executive car and the Jaguar XJ 3.0D V6 Luxury for best luxury car.
