The next major event on the automotive calendar is the New York Motor Show, starting on 16 April. A number of interesting debuts are expected, including these from Land Rover, Kia and BMW.

BMW M4 Convertible After revealing the M3 and M4 saloon and coupe in January's Detroit Motor Show, BMW will be bringing the convertible version of the M4 to New York. A third turbocharged effort from the M-Division, it will use the same straight six 3.0 litre engine as the M3 and M4 for 425bhp and plenty of torque. The M4 Convertible will be priced from just over £60,000 and go on sale in the UK in September.

BMW X4 The X4 is the sportier, coupe-esque version of the X3 - it's a similar relationship of the X6 to the X5, but in smaller form. It goes on sale in the UK in July, with prices starting at £36,590. Its main rivals will be premium compact SUVs from the sportier end of the market, such as the Range Rover Evoque and the Porsche Macan.

Kia Sedona Kia might be known for no-frills competence on a budget but is making a good effort make its cars more stylish. The medium sized new Sedona MPV hasn't yet been given a UK release date but will be able to seat eight people plus luggage, with a rugged, adventurous air to it.

Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept Part of a new 'family' of Discovery models, this concept shows a more upmarket feel for the 'leisure' pillar of Land Rover's new corporate strategy. The new design language will be seen first on the replacement for the existing Freelander, currently dubbed the 'baby Discovery.'

Mazda MX-5 While a production ready new MX-5 is some way off yet, rumours abound that a work in progress version of the sporty roadster will make an appearance in New York. It previews bolder styling and a modern range of 1.5 and 2.0 litre petrol engines using Mazda's excellent SkyActiv technology. A finished version is due to reach the market in 2015.

Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe The four seater, high performance variant of the new S-Class coupe has received the AMG treatment, meaning a twin turbo 5.5 litre V8 under the bonnet for 577bhp. It also gets Magic Body Control and for £100,000, will be pretty plush. It reaches the UK market in November.
