One of the best days out on the British automotive calendar is nigh, with the Goodwood Festival of Speed opening on 26th June. This year, the event is sponsored by Mercedes and the theme is 'Addicted to Winning - the Unbeatable Champions of Motor Sport.' Mercedes is championing the event to celebrate its 120 years of history in motorsport.

Maserati is also celebrating its centenary at the show and is set to display some of its most important racers, such as the Maserati Tipo 26B from 1928 and the MC12 GT.

The famous Goodwood hill climb will see the global debuts of new road cars, including a Honda NSX hybrid supercar prototype plus the new BMWs M4 Cabriolet and M5 30 Jahre Edition, a Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake, which is a mash up of a family estate and a supercar, and a Volvo V60 Polestar. Sebastian Loeb will be making an attempt on the hill climb record in his Peugeot 208 T16 Pike's Peak racer. The record is currently held by Nick Heidfeld at 0:45:86.

Among the other big names taking on the 1.16 mile race will be TV star, Charley Boorman, on his BMW GS 1150 motorbike, IndyCar champion, Dario Franchitti, in a Mercedes DTM, Damon Hill in a Williams FW18 Formula One, Olympic gold medal winning cyclist, Sir Chris Hoy - on four wheels this time - in a Nissan GTR GT3 and F1 ace, Sir Jackie Stewart, in his Tyrell-Cosworth 001.

A number of famous faces will be attending the weekend, such as British racing legend, Sir Stirling Moss, Jenson Button, motorcycle and F1 winner, John Surtees, Mark Webber, F1 and Indy 500 star, Emerson Fittipaldi, and Lewis Hamilton.

Other vehicles showing off their credentials at Goodwood include the Koenigsegg One:1 hypercar, a 1322bhp beast that's planning to take on the road legal car hill climb record, the laddish Honda Civic Type R concept, in action for the first time in public, the BMW i8 hybrid supercar and the Audi R8 LMX, a last shout edition of the German brand's supercar and the first road car in the world to be equipped with laser headlights.

The FoS is held at Goodwood House in West Sussex and has been running since 1993, set up in tribute to the glorious racing history of the estate. It is now one of the largest motoring events in the UK and makes a great family outing.
