New Volkswagen Golf

The seventh generation Golf is now lighter and offer a sharper more responsive drive, as well as a well-built interior and efficient engines

The Volkswagen Golf is one of the most popular hatchbacks on the market, and the newest model features subtle changes in the bodywork but with the same unmistakable profile. Although it doesn't stray far from the exterior design of its predecessor, the new Golf still manages to be longer, wider and lighter than its older sibling. The cabin is very well built and quiet, with high-quality plastics on the dashboard, supportive seats and various details that create a more elegant and comfortable ambience.

Various petrol and diesel engines are offered with the new Golf, and they all provide a good mix of power and efficiency. Small yet powerful, the 1.0-litre BlueMotion TSI engine can go from 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds. The 1.6-litre TDI has more than enough power, and coupled with a manual gearbox it also offers lower running costs. Comfortable and quiet, the new Golf is good to drive around both town and the motorway in equal measure. The steering is precise and there is good grip in tighter corners, whilst the suspension manages to efficiently reduce the impact of bumps in the road. The trims are very well-equipped, and the entry-level S model gets DAB digital radio, Bluetooth, a 5.8inch colour touchscreen and air-conditioning. There are also a variety of optional packs are also extensive, with adaptive dampers, parking sensors and a hi-tech audio system available, amongst others.

The most frugal engine is the 1.6-litre TDI BlueMotion diesel that returns a claimed 88.3mpg and emits less than 100g/km of CO2, so there will be no annual road tax to pay. The five-star safety rating obtained after the Euro NCAP crash tests brings more peace of mind, along with the vast range of safety features that include multiple airbags and a tyre-pressure warning system, with other extras also available.

Perfect for Small Families & Professionals The Volkswagen Golf is beloved for a reason and the new version doesn't disappoint. More comfortable than ever before, the car will suit drivers who prefer a compact and practical car that can handle both city streets and longer journeys on the motorway.
