New BMW X4

The eccentric design of the X4 is based on the platform of the X3, and excels with a practical cabin and a choice of great equipment. The X4 also drives exceptionally well, with plenty of grip.

Expanding on the design of the X3, the X4 offers a sportier looking SUV with a lower stance. Merging the driving experience of a 4x4, with a more stylish body type, the X4 is a great cross between practicality and aesthetics. The sloping roofline gives the X4 an aggressive appearance, whilst the inside of the X4 benefits from an ergonomic, well-designed cabin. The standard iDrive control system is as useful as ever, helping to organise the various functions contained within the console easily; the build of the dials themselves are fitted with soft-touch plastics. Leather trim and seating is present throughout, with metal detailing also.

The lower stance of the X4 compared to the X3 grants it a sportier suspension, and gives it better handling than its more typical counterpart. The four-wheel xDrive system provides the X4 with plenty of grip, so coaxing it around corners isn’t a chore, plus the accurate steering gives it an agility the X3 can’t match. The ride is also very streamlined, even at low speeds. The Driver Performance Control system is available on this model, and is great for tailoring aspects of the X4’s ride to your liking, with the Sport mode adding weight to the steering and speeding up the automatic gearbox. All of the X4’s diesel engines are very capable and work well with the gearbox, but the 30d is truly the most hardworking, and keeps momentum at high revs. As is the trend with the X Series, the X4 is well-equipped with features. Heated leather seats, sat-nav, climate control and DAB radio are just the start of the spec list. Higher trims offer sports seats, extra detailing and larger alloys.

Whichever trim you choose, you’ll get some useful safety features such as airbags, stability control, run-flat tyres and an auto-brake feature that activates at low speeds. Fuel economy and emissions however are close to the X3, with the whole range delivering either just under or over 50mpg.

Perfect for Driving Enthusiasts and Small Families The X4, being based off the X3, is unsurprisingly very similar in terms of usability. Admittedly, the redesign swaps out some rear space for a sportier, more streamlined appearance which is apparent in the X4’s performance. Those wanting more agile driving mechanics than your standard SUV, at a reasonable price, will find plenty of appeal here.
