New Audi A8

The A8 is an opulent saloon, offering the best in comfort, space and technology. There are a wealth of customisation options available, from passenger footrests to drinks coolers, whilst V6 models can help to balance out upfront costs with great economy.

The A8 boasts an understated elegance that is in line with common Audi design principles. Chrome strips line the grille, whilst another surrounds the car, adding a subtle touch of class - but the most notable difference lies within its structure. As one of the few luxury cars to be built from aluminium, the A8 is just 50kg heavier than the previous model, which in reality is a small increase given the amount of content added. Whilst it borrows elements from other cars in the Audi range, it really excels with its interior styling. The top-quality materials within the cabin are more than pleasing to the touch, with a mix of leather and inlays that would fit right at home in a Bentley, whilst the dashboard is ergonomic and well-laid out. The MMI touchpad control system included makes operating the A8’s various functions very intuitive. For a premium, extras such as heated/massage seating and double-glazing can be added.

A selection of petrol and diesel engines are available to select for the A8, including a V6, V8 and even a hybrid option (not to mention the bulky W12). Whilst all of the engines are more than competent, the ones toward the higher end of the scale are the most notable. The 4.2 litre TDI moves the A8’s two-tonne weight from 0-62 in just five seconds, assisted by plenty of torque and the efficient Quattro four-wheel drive. Despite all of this, engine noise is resolutely quiet and transmission is smooth. This extends all the way down to the 3.0 litre models, all of them having punchy performance. Steering is precise regardless of the driving mode, with great body control and road grip. The ride quality is nicely absorbent and helps to keep the A8 stable, especially at speed. The power of the W12 engine, exclusive to the larger wheelbase model, is enough to keep it on par with the smaller specifications. The sheer amount of equipment present, as well as optional extras gives the A8 a superb degree of customisation. Standard features include four-zone climate control, heated leather seats, DAB radio, satellite-navigation, LED headlights and the aforementioned MMI touchpad. Bang & Olufsen speakers, electric sun blinds, a folding table and drinks cooler are some of the more opulent additions available.

Running costs for the V6 models can somewhat offset the asking price, but regardless of which engine is picked, the A8 will always offer impressive performance and style. The A8 is well-equipped for safety, including eight airbags, night visions and Audi’s pre-sense system, which activates security measures in anticipation of an impending collision.

Perfect for Executives and Business Owners Those willing to splash out can really get their money’s worth with the A8, offering limitless customisation options based around maximising luxury. Without a doubt, this is a chauffeur’s choice of car, but more realistically primed for high-level businessmen looking to commute in style.
