Used Renault Laguna Overview

Background

The Renault Laguna is an era-spanning saloon/hatchback that first arrived in 1994 and gradually emerged as a bit of hit, with great sales allowing for a strong used market if you're interested in this practical French vehicle.

Back when the Laguna was new, you could pick between two modestly powered, fairly standard petrol engines or go for the 3.0 litre V6 if you wanted a bit more power. Diesel was added to the line up in 1995 with the addition of a 2.2 litre power plant, while this was also the year in which the first Laguna estates were launched.

1998 saw some design alterations initiated, along with a wider selection of engines, while in 1999 the trim options were expanded to include a number of exotically named selections.

The second generation of the approved used Renault Laguna touched down in 2001 and things were thoroughly modernised in order to help improve its competitiveness.

The new Laguna for sale looked great and was packed with fresh technological innovations to give it a better chance of assailing the Ford Mondeo.

You could pick from three petrol engines once more, although the basic 1.6 litre model was more frugal than its predecessor. Meanwhile the 3.0 litre unit delivered 210bhp and was no slouch when it came to performance.

2005 saw a bit of a facelift for the second gen Renault Laguna, while sportier trims and integrated sat nav on special editions helped to enliven the range.

In 2007 the Renault Laguna for sale entered its third generation, with a small and surprisingly effective 1.5 litre diesel engine on the cards from day one, which made it an appealing option for fleet buyers once more.

Some were less enamoured with the new style of the Laguna, but for others it was a step in the right direction towards wider mainstream appeal.

Three years later the third gen Renault Laguna for sale underwent another major overhaul, this time resulting in a much more striking aesthetic design and a focus on diesel power rather than petrol.

The Laguna kicked the bucket as a range in 2012, but that means the used market is packed with juicy models ripe for the picking.

Bang for your buck

Every generation of the second hand Renault Laguna has been well put together, so you get to feel like you're driving an executive vehicle without the associated price tag.

The first Laguna cars for sale are relatively well equipped for their age, although you'll want to check out the second or third gen models if you want all the mod cons.

Interior and exterior match one another for style and quality, so with the litany of trim options you can really pick and choose your own levels of gadgetry and comfort.

What you'll pay

For the most recent, face lifted third generation of the Renault Laguna you can expect to pay from £10,000 to £12,000 for the popular 1.5 litre diesel iteration.

There are older third gen models available for half that, while a decent Laguna II will cost from £1000 to £2500.

Early used Renault Lagunas are obviously cheap by this point given that they are getting a little long in the tooth, but if you're looking for a reliable and practical bargain, you can't really go wrong.

What to check

Even the oldest Laguna model should be relatively reliable if it hasn't been driven into the ground, so check for the usual wear and tear and avoid anything that has mega miles on the clock and limited service history.

Parts

There are so many different Laguna iterations that working out how much you'll pay for parts can be tricky. This is a Renault, so it shouldn't be too expensive and the windscreen might be around the £135 mark, while headlamps stick at about £120.

How it drives

The first Renault Laguna for sale isn't a stand-out performer, although it gets the job done and is quietly composed in the corners as well as being comfortable over long motorway stretches.

In its second generation things feel a bit more interesting, although again you'll find that the car does tend towards the duller, more comfortable end of the spectrum.

With the whittling down of the petrol engines and the bigging up of the diesel options, latter day Lagunas are frugal and benefit from modern driving aids and safety features.
