Used Peugeot 4007 Overview

Background

Prior to the launch of the 4007 in 2007 Peugeot had no history of making 4x4s. That explains why it roped in Mitsubishi to help and so thanks to a joint venture the 4007 is essentially the same car as the Mitsubishi Outlander and Citroen C-Crosser.
The Peugeot version of the car is only available with the 2.2-litre twin-turbo HDi diesel engine, found in various other Peugeot and Citroen products, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Given the need to make it different from its sister cars the 4007 has a distinctive nose treatment that won't be to every taste but certainly makes it stand out from all the look-alike SUVs in the supermarket car park. It's practical too with a clever 5+2 seating configuration offering two occasional seats that fold away under the boot floor.

Bang for your buck

There were initially only two trim levels with the Peugeot 4007, the entry level SE and a more upmarket GT version. Standard equipment across the range includes on-demand four-wheel drive, electronic stability control, ABS and electronic brake force distribution, roof bars, climate control, alarm system, trip computer and front fog lights.
The GT adds 18-inch alloys (16-inch on the SE), full leather upholstery, 6-disc CD changer, rear parking sensors and Xenon headlights.
Optional from 2008 was the Irmscher Sport Pack adding 19-inch wheels, front and rear spoilers and tailpipe finishers. 2009 saw the addition of a Sport XS model to the range with a five seat only configuration along with chrome side bars, mirrors, door handles and tail pipe extension. Also in 2009 a 6-speed DCS automatic gearbox became available as an option offering full automatic operation or a sequential shift mode using paddles behind the steering wheel.

What you'll pay

A 07 plate Peugeot 4007 SE for sale will sell for about £7,500 but expect to pay around £800 more for a same age GT. An 09 plate Sport XS will be about £11,500 and a 2010 GT in the region of £16,000

What to check

Check if the car has been used for towing as clutch and dual-mass flywheel failures are common in cars that have relatively high first and second gears. Crankshaft oil seal leaks can lead to a slipping clutch. As with any 4x4 check for signs of damage from off-road use.

Parts

A replacement exhaust, without the cat is around £285, a new clutch about £215. Alternators and starter motors should both be around £175 each, a door mirror is £165 and a headlamp a steep £240.

How it drives

The torquey twin-turbo diesel makes the 4007 a relaxed and pleasant drive and at 9.6 seconds for the 0-60 sprint it's no slouch either. It can manage 39 mpg too so won't damage your green credentials. Ride quality is good, steering is nicely weighted and it doesn't wallow like some SUVs.
The four-wheel drive system has three modes, 2WD which selects front drive only, Auto which brings in rear drive as required to stabilise the car and Lock which gives 50:50 power distribution at low speeds. Most of the time it's fine in 2WD mode but the Auto setting tightens up the front end nicely in wet or slippery road conditions. Although it's only a 'soft roader' the 4007 performs quite well on muddy tracks. There are better off road choices in this class but few perform as well on road as the approved used Peugeot 4007.
Inside you get five comfortable seats and the rears fold completely flat for load carrying by pressing a button near the wheel arch. A split tailgate Range Rover-style makes for easy loading and provides a useful bench for picnics and spectator events. The pop-up seats in the boot are really only suitable for small children though. Overall the interior feels roomy and nicely put together with a good feel to the plastics.

The compact SUV market has boomed in recent years and manufacturers have been rushing to get on the bandwagon. By teaming up with Mitsubishi Peugeot was able to come up with a competitive product straight out of the box. The 4007 is good on the road and reasonably competent off it. The 2.2-litre engine is better than Mitsubishi's VW-sourced 2.0-litre offering, the cabin is spacious and it's well made. Overall the Peugeot 4007 for sale has a lot to commend it to used car buyers.
