It was the Hyundai i30 that did it. Before that car arrived in 2007, it was possible to patronise Hyundai a bit, congratulate them for nearly getting it right, damn them with faint praise. The used Hyundai i30 was a game changer. Suddenly here was a car that could mix it with some of the better family hatches and better them in some key regards. Since then the Korean company hasn't looked back and has embarked on a dizzying product offensive that's been solid gold almost across the board.
Used buyers haven't been slow to capitalise on the glut of Hyundai i10 stock generated by the new car scrappage scheme. At one point, the i10 commanded nearly 50% of the new city car sector, so be choosy and negotiate hard. You can afford to walk away from any deal you don't fancy. The new Hyundai i20 has been a solid seller, although the ix models haven't fared quite so well. The i40 has yet to find its legs on the used market, although this is certainly one to keep a watching brief on. Likewise the eccentric Veloster coupe.
The second hand Hyundai i30 was facelifted in 2010 and the first of these facelift cars are looking very good value, as is the older Tucson compact 4x4. Another model that might well be worth a try is the Hyundai Coupe. The third generation car still looks extremely smart and you wouldn't believe the price you can pick up a low mileage 2.7 V6 model for. Put it this way; you could buy, tax and insure one and still have change from £2,000 if you played your cards right.
